The ribbon: the key consumable of TTO marking
On a thermal transfer overprinter (TTO), the ribbon is the only consumable — and the number one factor in print quality. Three formulation families exist, each suited to a substrate and a constraint. Picking the wrong reference means fading marks, premature printhead wear or an unnecessarily high cost per metre.
Wax: the economical entry level
Wax ribbons suit porous substrates: papers, uncoated boards, standard labels. Low cost per metre, low-temperature printing (gentle on the printhead), but limited resistance to abrasion, moisture and chemicals. Ideal for logistics and simple labelling.
Wax-resin: the best all-rounder
Wax-resin is the most widely used TTO ribbon: it anchors on flexible films (PE, PP, aluminized complexes), resists abrasion and condensation, and handles high line speeds. The default choice for date coding on food sachets and flowpacks.
Resin: maximum resistance
Resin ribbons target smooth synthetic surfaces (PET, PVC, glossy labels) and harsh environments: abrasion, solvents, oils, heat, outdoor exposure. Higher cost and print temperature — reserve it for applications that truly demand it.
Hot transfer or thermal transfer?
Don't confuse TTO ribbon with hot transfer ribbon (hot foil) for hot coders like the Super Compact: mechanical technology, different formats and formulations — including gold/silver metallic finishes for cosmetic packaging.
Width, length, colour: good habits
- Width: pick the width just above the print area (40, 50, 55, 110 mm…) — excess width wastes ribbon.
- Length: 300 to 1100 m depending on throughput; longer rolls mean fewer changeovers.
- Colour: black is standard, but blue, white, grey, red, green and orange exist for product differentiation.
