ISO 15415 defines quality criteria for 2D symbols such as DataMatrix and QR codes. It evaluates decoding, contrast, modulation, grid, defects, unused error correction and distortion.

Why code quality matters

A code that looks acceptable to the eye may fail in an industrial scanner. Substrate, resolution, contrast, speed, ink spread and printhead distance all affect the grade.

How to improve the grade

Use an appropriate resolution, a stable print process and sufficient contrast. Avoid folds, seams and irregular areas. Use a verifier or vision system to measure quality and automatically reject failed codes. The X72 can be considered for direct barcode and 2D-code marking on cartons and porous packaging, while TTO is suitable for flexible film when the ribbon and substrate are validated together.
