A successful integration starts with a line assessment
Installing a coder on an existing line is more than mounting a printhead. You must understand product movement, speeds, stops, format changes, operator access and the data available from the PLC. This prevents trigger faults, shifted messages and difficult maintenance.
Record minimum and maximum speed, travel direction, available space, product spacing and the exact marking position. Document the format changes and the substrates before choosing the final setup.
Five technical elements to plan
1. Printhead. Mount it on a rigid bracket at the correct distance and protect it from shocks, vibration, dust and splashes.
2. Product sensor. It detects each product or carton and starts the print. Its location must prevent double triggers and account for the distance between detection and marking.
3. Encoder. When conveyor speed changes, the encoder synchronizes message length with actual speed. This prevents stretched or compressed characters.
4. PLC and data. The coder must receive the right reference, lot, date or sequence number. Communication with ERP, MES or WMS reduces manual entry and recipe errors.
5. Quality control. A camera or verifier can check the presence, position and readability of barcodes and 2D codes before shipping.
Match the integration to the technology
TTO is installed on packaging equipment and must be synchronized with film, pouch pitch and sealing. The
53K supports demanding applications with ultrasonic ribbon indexing, SMARTFORCE™ tension management and KCC software for variables and databases. The
NG2+ suits continuous or intermittent lines and reinforced resin ribbons.
CIJ suits bottles, parts, cables, tubes and packages passing without contact. The
IQJET is designed to reduce downtime with its hermetic ink system and long maintenance intervals. For cartons and pallets, the
X72 or
ResMark 5000 provide direct contactless printing.
Pre-production checklist
- Validate substrate and mark durability.
- Test real speed variations.
- Set the sensor and encoder.
- Create and lock recipes by reference.
- Test format changes.
- Verify PLC, ERP, MES or WMS communication.
- Check printed codes and define a reject procedure.
- Train operators on daily checks.
Conclusion
A well-prepared integration secures print quality without slowing the line. A site trial validates mechanics, signals, data and maintenance before full deployment.
